The two boys, said to be, sons of the Duc de Bouillon: Jacques Leopold Charles Godefrey, Prince de Bouillon and his younger brother Charles Louis Godefroy, Prince d’Auvergne. The portrait depicts the two boys as Montagnards. One plays a hurdy-gurdy and the other holds a marmot with a ribbon. Both activities associated with the people of the mountains especially in Savoy. In fact, over one half of the male Savoyards came to Paris every year, including children. They performed such menial tasks like cleaning streets and chimneys, acting as porters. The younger members were playing musical instruments such as recorders and hurdy-gurdy, amusing passing by people, performing rodents - squirrels and marmots. back.....
