Pina’s biographer Pawlowski notes…”Here at first is the Extreme Effort toward liberation, the mad hope of deliverance splendidly represented by this man who, kneeling on a rock, turns his head toward implacable heaven and wrings his arms”.
The Italian born Alfredo Pina (1883-1966) studied at the Accademia di Brera and in 1906 won the Gran Premio Nazionale for sculpture. He moved to Paris before the First World War.
