Recently not many biographical information was known about Matthijs, or Mathieu, van Plattenberg. Mainly thanks to his grandson, the painter Nicolas Vleughels (1668-1737), we knew at least something about this artist, who originated from Flanders.(1) In 2004 Jean Mazel published documents which proved that Vleughels story was basically true and these documents also brought new facts to light.(2) Van Plattenberg was born in Antwerp around 1608 and we assume that he probably was a pupil of the marine painter Andries van Eertvelt (1590-1652). We also may assume that Van Plattenberg went to Italy with his teacher, where Van Eertvelt stayed with Cornelis de Wael in Genua from circa 1627 until 1631. Whether Van Plattenberg did the same, is not known, but seems very likely. In this period he also seems to have visited Florence and Naples.

Thanks to Nicolas Vleughels, director of the French Academy in Rome, we already knew that his grandfather was in Paris in 1630,……………………………..
