W kolekcji, z której pochodzi, jak również informacji wcześniejszych właścicieli, obraz ten funkcjonował pod tytułem “Portret Marii”.
Dotychczasowe próby odnalezienia Marii nie powiodły się, mimo poszukiwań w kręgu osób i miejsc gdzie przebywał w 1867 roku. Ligatura i data to wszystko, natomiast nie wiadomo gdzie Portret powstał. Czy tak jak “Portret Heleny”, wnuczki Adama Mickiewicza w Paryżu czy akwarela jak “Wspomnienie z Wenecji” w Wenecji, obie prace są z 1867 i w zbiorach Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie. Jedyna informacja, oczywiście poza datą, to na odwrociu odcisk w czerwonym laku i na nim herb rodowy, który z racji czasu i uszkodzeń nie jest w pełni czytelny i kolekcjoner, pozostaje nieznany. Nie wiadomo czy należałoby go wiązać z osobą portretowaną, czy późniejszymi właścicielami obrazu.

In the collection from which it came, as well as in the records of previous owners, this painting was titled “Portrait of Mary.”
Efforts to locate Mary have been unsuccessful, despite searching the circle of people and places where he was in 1867. The ligature and date are all that remain, but the location when Grottger rendered this work remains unknown. Could it be Paris, as the “Portrait drawing of Helena”, Adam Mickiewicz’s granddaughter or watercolor “Memories of Venice” in Venice? Both works are from 1867 in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. The only information, besides the date we find on the reverse impresed in red wax seal, coat of arms. Due to time and damages, the family name of the collector, remains unknown. It is unclear whether it should be attributed to the portrait subject or to the painting’s later owners.
